The fifth leg of the European Poker Tour (EPT) was in the eastern european city of Prague, the first time a major tournament was held in the Czech Republic. 555 players entered the €5,000 buy in main event with the field split into two fields. Both sets of players played out the first day, and the surviving players from both groups combined on the second day, and continued until we were down to the final 9 players to fight out the final positions on the fourth and final day.

There was a number of the well known pro’s starting out this event with the likes of Annette Obretad winner of the WSOPE main event, Katja Thater and Julian Threw to name a few.

When we eventually got to the final table stage of the tournament the chip rankings was as follows:

Final Table Chip Rankings:

  • 1st Mikael Norinder $1,036,000
  • 2nd Arnaud Mattern $980,000
  • 3rd Dagomir Palovic $759,000
  • 4th Kristisn Kjondal $740,000
  • 5th Gino Alachua $660,000
  • 6th Juha Lauttamus $567,000
  • 7th Markus Golser $352,000
  • 8th Johannes Stresemann $245,000
  • 9th Nedzib Suman $216,000

We didn’t have to wait long for the final table to spring into life as on the third hand of play Mikael Norinder eliminated Johannes Strassmann out into 9th place. Norinder called the All In move with pocket Nines and was a big favourite to take the pot against pocket Deuces. The Nines held up with the final board coming down :3d :ks :6c :10s :10d confirming Strassmann’s exit to collect €39,200.

Even though Norinder had the chip lead and picked up the early win, his luck was about to change dramatically within the space of a couple of hands. First he called Arnaud Mattern All In with :ah :qh against pocket Kings. The board came down :9d :2h :5s :7c :6c giving Mattern the huge pot and the chip lead. This loss had left Norinder with just €200,000 in chips and he moved All In with :jh :9s on the next hand, Kristian Kjondal called with :ah :kc The Flop missed both players coming out :2h :2d :qc but the :ac on the Turn meant Norinder was drawing dead on the river going out in 8th place.

The next two players eliminated left for the rail in successive hands. Dagomir Palovic was the first the go, dominated All In with :ac :10c against Kjondal with :ad :jd Palovic collected €93,600 coming in 7th. Then Nedzib Suman went out in a coin flip situation, loosing with :ac :10s against Juha Lauttamus’s pocket Sevens.

Play slowed down considerably at this point, with most pots being decided before we saw a Flop with all players trying to steal the blinds. The next knock out hand came when we did get to see a Flop. Mark Gosler called an €85,000 bet from Lauttamus and the Flop came down :jc :6s :5c Gosler moved All In and was immediately called by Lauttamus showing :jh :qs Gosler had :kc :10c looking for a club flush. The :9d on the Turn gave Gosler even more outs with a chance of a straight as well as the flush with one card to come. The :7h ended Gosler’s hopes eliminating him out in 5th place winning €151,800.

Lauttamus had the chip lead at this point but threw it all away moving All In pre Flop against Mattern sitting on pocket Aces. The Aces held up handing Mattern a huge over all chip lead and left Lauttamus with just €400,000. The end came for Lauttamus shortly after moving his chips in with :qd :2d and was called by Gino Alacqua with :qh :4c Gino paired his four on the Flop which was good enough to take down the pot.

It didn’t take long before we were heads up, Kristian Kjondal was the player eliminated in 3rd place. His exit came when he moved All In with :kd :6d after the Flop came down :3c :4s :5c His opponent was Gino Alacqua who made a good call with :kc :5s Kjonal’s only chance to survive was to hit the straight, but the :8c and :jd came down to end his tournament.

Gino Alacqua had a big chip lead over Mattern at the start of heads up but this was to quickly change. First Mattern doubled up winning with pocket Jacks against :ad :9h On the next hand of play Gino moved All In with :qd :10d and was called by Mattern with :ad :ks The Flop came down :2d :6s :jd giving Gino a Flush draw. The :kh on the Turn gave him more outs as he had a chance of a straight needing an Ace or Nine and of course any diamond to win. The River came down with the :2c giving Mattern the win collecting €708,400 and a seat to the main event at the EPT grand final in Monte Carlo.

The next stop on the EPT tour takes us to the luxurious Paradise Islands in the Bahamas. Satellites to this or any other EPT tournament can be found daily at Poker Stars .

Final Standings:

  • 1st Arnaud Mattern €708,400
  • 2nd Gino Alacqua €407,300
  • 3rd Kristian Kjondal €235,300
  • 4th Juha Lauttamus €182,200
  • 5th Markus Golser €151,800
