WSOP
Saturday, May 26, 2007 | Francis Lee
Less than two weeks to go until the start of the much anticipated World Series of Poker 2007 held in the gambling capital of the world Las Vegas. With all the poker professionals, amateurs and celebrities from around the world starting to arrive in Las Vegas the atmosphere around the town is starting to hit fever pitch. Most people staying for up to five weeks to spectate and take part in the fifty five scheduled events, starting on 1st June and finishing with the $10,000 World Championship Main Event on 6th July.
Sixteen more events than last year have been put on giving players more chances to win the large cash prizes on offer. Players will also be looking to get the most sought after WSOP gold bracelet in the Championship events. In between events there are live satellites giving players a cheaper way to get a seat into the WSOP main event.
Last years main event winner Jamie Gold took home a massive $12 million dollars first place prize and the title of World Champion. We had 8,773 starting out in the tournament creating an unprecedented prize pool of $82,512,126 paying up to 873rd places. This year event organisers are expecting the amount of attending players to again increase by a large amount than last year with the huge interest in poker increasing each year attracting both professional and amateur poker players. Especially with the increase in seats for the main event being won through satellites with the many online poker rooms.
Chris Moneymaker is the man most people say has changed the outlook on poker and the WSOP main event in 2003, an accountant and amateur online poker player paying just $39 to enter a satellite held at Poker Stars, won through and gained a seat to the main event. Historically the main events out look was that a select few professional players even had a chance to win this prize but Moneymaker smashed this theory to pieces inspiring all amateur poker players across the globe to have a go.
The very next year in 2004 another amateur poker player Greg Raymer won the Main event winning $5million dollars, and with the increase of television coverage of the poker world ever since the popularity of this event has got bigger each year. Veiw the all the events scheduled this year below.
