The second starting day (day 1B) for the World Series of Poker main event had a smaller field of just 873 players starting out.  This was due to the July 4th holidays and also the final two starting days traditionally has the biggest fields of the event.

There were quite a few former WSOP champions in the field with Doyle Brunson, Chris Moneymaker, Jim Bechtel, Chris Ferguson, Carlos Mortensen and Greg Raymer.  The other notable faces in the crowd included Alex Kravchenko, Jerrod Akenman, Luca Pagano, Barry Greenstein, Hoyt Corkins and boxing champ Winky Wright to name a few.

The 2003 champ Chris Moneymaker was one of the first big name players to be eliminated when he ran his pocket Tens into pocket Aces. Winky Wright couldn’t last the distance as he was knocked out alongside David Steicke.  Doyle Brunson was unfortunate to be eliminated when getting his entire chip stack in with a flopped set of Three’s against an opponent with a straight draw. The straight hit on the Turn and the River bricked out for Brunson.  Jeremiah Smith went out in almost the same way when his flopped set of Three’s.  This time he was behind his opponent when he revealed a flopped set of Aces.

When play came to a close Brandon Demes was the chip leader on $137,075.  The other big manes to make it through were Alex Kravchenko, Luca Pagano, Jerrod Ankenman, Greg Raymer, Shaun Deeb, Barry Greenstein, Chris Ferguson and Erik Seidel.  Of the 873 starters, 653 players made it through to day two.
