Of the 407 players who returned for day five of the 2009 World Series of Poker main event, just 185 players survived with the eliminations continuing to come at a very fast pace which is unusual at this stage of the tournament.  The day proved to be brutal to some of the players dreams of winning the event, as many bad beats during the day sent a lot players to the rail.

Some of the early eliminations included Sorel Mizzi, Thor Hansen, Nick Binger and Leo Labbe.  Another former champ Dan Harrington fell early on when moving his chips in after the flop, on a club flush draw holding :ac :qc Eric Cloutier made the call with :ad :kh and dodged the clubs on the Turn and River to send Harrington out of the event.  This meant only two former champions were left in the field with Joe Hachem and the 2008 champion Peter Eastgate.

Warren Zackey won the biggest pot of the day which was worth over 4 million in chips to take him to the top of the leader board to where he remained right to the end of the day.  This came when all the chips went in after the Flop came down :9c :6c :3d Zackey had pocket Tens against Tom Lutz with :ac :qc looking to hit a flush or one of his over cards.  Neither came as the :8d and :5s completed the board.

The notable names doing well included J.C Tran, Phil Ivey, Antonio Esfandiari and Tom Schneider who ended up 4th best at the close of play.  Matt Affleck still remained in the top 10 after finishing top of the pile on day four along with James Akenhead.
