The 33rd event at the World Series of Poker 2007 was a Pot Limit Omaha $1,500 buy in tournament with re-buys played over three days.  The prize pool generated by the entrance fee’s and re-buys swelled to $1,684,305 paying fisrt place just over $450,000, with the rest of the prize pool shared between the 24 top placed players.

Qushqar Morad was leading the chip rankings at the end of day two with just under 1 million in chips, followed by Chris Bjorin on $605,000.  Alan Smurfit was the man on the short stack with $95,000 but wasnt the only player under pressure, with the three players positioned just above him having around the $200,000 mark.

Final Table Chip Rankings:

  • 1st Qushqar Morad $995,000
  • 2nd Chris Bjorin $605,000
  • 3rd Brandon Adams $500,000
  • 4th Chau Giang $360,000
  • 5th Hilbert Shirey $335,000
  • 6th Van Marcus $220,000
  • 7th Robert Fellner $210,000
  • 8th Sonny Nirjan $195,000
  • 9th Alan Smurfit $95,000

It was the chip leader Qushqar Morad who eliminated the first player out of the tournament, on only the second hand of play. Hilbert Shirey was this unfortunate player moving All In with :as :ah :jh :8d with the Flop coming down :ks :6c :3h Morad had him dominated showing :kh :kd :jd :3c leaving Shirey needing help with two card to come. Shirey never got this help with the :8s and :7c coming down on the Turn and River knocking him out in 9th place winning $30,317.

Sunny Nirjan became Morad’s second victim in a row going out of the event on the 22nd hand of play. Nirjan looked to be in a good position holding :kh :ks :jd :7c hitting a set of Kings with the Flop with it coming down :kd :6h :4c Morad had an open ended straight draw holding :as :5d :5h :3s and this was his only chance at winning this pot. The 9h on the Turn was no help to Morad but the :2c on the River completed his Six high straight. Nirjan unlucky to go out of the tournament collected $42,108 in 8th place.

We didn’t have to wait long for the next player to head for the rail. Just four hands after Nirjan’s exit Robert Fellner lost to Chau Giang hitting a broad way straight holding :qs :js :9d :8s Fellner All In with a pair of Jacks was out of the tournament in 7th place winning $57,266.

Morad continued to dominate play and extended his chip lead when eliminating Brandon Adams out into 6th place. Adams with :ac :ad :8s :6d was beaten by Morad with :qd :qh :3c :3d when Morad hit a full house Three’s over Jacks with the final board showing :jd :jh :9c :3s :9h Adams took $75,795 for his 6th place finish.

A dozen hands later Morad was at it again knocking his fourth player of five that had gone out of the tournament. Chau Giang moved All In when the Flop came down :kc :qd :10c to which Morad happily called. Morad flipped over :ac :jc :10d :4c having hit a broad way straight and having a nut flush draw. Giang’s only chance of winning the pot with :10s :10h :7h :4s was if the board paired up which would give him the full house. This didn’t happen for him though with the :3h and :9h coming down confirming his exit winning $96,005 in 5th place.

Van Marcus was on the short stack at this point but quickly moved up the chip rankings doubling up twice in a row before eliminating Chris Bjorin out into 4th place. Both players saw the Flop which came down :9d :6c :2d and this was followed by bets between both players until Bjorin was all In. Bjorin flipped over :qc :10c :9h :7s and Marcus had :as :js :10d :7d putting Bjorin in a small lead with a pair of Nines, but Marcus had over cards and a flush draw giving him a good chance to wi the pot. The :3h on the Turn didn’t affect either players hand but the :qd on the River completed Marcus’s flush knocking Bjorin out in 4th place winning $129,691.

Alan Smurfit who started out on the short stack at the beginning of the day , quietly going about his business building his chip stack had reached nearly a million in chips. Both he and Morad ground Van Marcus down until he made a  last stand hitting trip Sixes on the Flop. Unfortunately he ran into Alan Smurfit with a full house Sevens over Sixes. Only a Six on the last two cards could save Marcus but they never came with two Queens coming down instead.

Qushqar Morad held almost double the chip stack of Alan Smurfit with over 2 million in chips. The heads up show down between the two lasted for over five hours playing 167 hands before it was all over. It was Alan Smurfit who won through in the end coming back and eventually beating Morad when hitting two pair on the Turn with Morad only having pocket Nines. The River didn’t improve Morad’s hand giving Smurfit the victory winning him his very first WSOP bracelet and $464,867 in prize money. A great come back complete considering his lowly starting position on this final table.
