The $50,000 H.O.R.S.E event is regarded as the Poker Pro’s main event at the World Series of Poker, being the largest buy in event throughout th whole series. There was over 2 million dollars waiting for the winner out of the 148 entrants starting out, most of whom were the best and most well known players in the world.  The event was played over five days, playing five variations of poker, Limit Hold’em, Omaha Hi-Low, Razz, Seven card Stud and Stud Hi-low.When we eventually reached the end of day four Amnon Filippi was leading the field with just over 4 million in chips closely followed by Freddy Deeb on 3.5 million. Thor Hansen was on the short stack with only $40,000 left and needed to get lucky early on.Final Table chip rankings:

  • 1st Amnon Filippi $4,015,000
  • 2nd Freddy Deeb $3,500,000
  • 3rd Kenny Tran $2,445,000
  • 4th John Hanson $1,995,000
  • 5th David Singer $1,330,000
  • 6th Bruno Fitoussi $895,000
  • 7th Barry Greenstein $750,000
  • 8th Thor Hansen $40,000

It was Thor Hansen on the short stack who was the first player to be eliminated from the tournament. Making a stand on the very first hand of play in a multi pot playing Stud Hi-Low. John Hanson won the pot having two pairs Sevens and Fives and was good enough to knock Thor Hansen out of the tournament in 8th place winning $188,256.

Barry Greenstein was the next player to go out whilst playing Omaha against the chip leader Amnon Filippi. Greenstein had :ah :10c :5h :4s and was up against Filippi with :as :qd :js :6h The board came down :qh :9h :9s :9d :4c giving Filippi the pot having trip nines with A-Q kicker. Green stein took $259,296 in prize money for finishing in 7th place.

David Singer was the next player out of the tournament on the 39th hand of play up against Bruno Fitoussi playing Razz. Fitoussi ended up with 8-7 low and this was good enough to take the pot with Singer only having 9-8 low, Singer won $337,440 for his 6th place finish.

It took a while before we lost our next player, after a couple hours of play had passed. Kenny Tran was this unfortunate person loosing all his chips with in two hands playing Razz. First he lost most of his chips to Freddy Deeb folding on the seventh street when Deeb had made a nine low. Then on the very next hand he lost the rest of his chip stack to Amnon Filippi. Tran could not beat the 7 low Filippi made on the 5th street and was drawing dead on the last two cards. Kenny Tran went out in 5th place winning $444,000.

Amnon Filippi was the next player to head for the rail beaten by Bruno Fitoussi into 4th place playing Stud Hi-Low. Filippi lost to a 9 high flush whilst missing a higher flush draw and a full house having numerous outs on the last card. Filippi collected just over half a million dollars for his trouble.

It wasn’t until over 150 hands had passed before the next knockout hand came, John Hansen not known around the poker world before this final table appearance was holding his own playing some good poker, until he met his end on the 315th hand of play. Playing Razz Hanson called all of Freddy Deeb bets right down to the seventh street until he was All In. Deeb showed a 6-5 low winning the pot after Hanson mucked his seven low.

Going into the heads up showdown Freddy Deeb was in the chip lead with 10.8 million in chips, over double of what Bruno Filippi stack. Deeb made this advantage count grinding Filippi down and eventually taking the title winning in the Stud Hi-Low period of the game. Deebs 8 low and pair of Fives was good enough to win both high and low giving him the massive top prize of $2,276,832 and the WSOP braclet.
