The $2,000 buy-in Limit Hold’em Championship event at the World Series of poker 2007 was scheduled to be the 43rd event of the series.  Only 472 players started out as this event ran alongside the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E event which was attracting most of the attention.

The prize pool was still a healthy $859,040 with 1st prize set to win $217,329. There were many notable faces amongst the players with the likes of Chris “Jesus” Ferguson, Humberto Brenes, Men “the master” Nguyen and Tom Schneider to name a few.  Only 9 players made it to the final table to be played on the third and final day and here’s how they lined up.

Final Table Chip Rankings:

  • 1st Tommy Rounds $406,000
  • 2nd Saif Ahmad $322,000
  • 3rd Joseph Mandia $259,000
  • 4th Michael Graffeo $250,000
  • 5th William Jensen $245,000
  • 6th Justin Pechie $147,000
  • 7th Gerald Kane $129,000
  • 8th Robert Pacleb $104,000
  • 9th Hal Havlisch $30,000

Gerald Kane was the first unlucky player to go out of the tournament when loosing with :as :qd to Tommy Rounds with pocket Fours.  The Pot wasn’t big as Kane had lost most of his chips on the previous hand.  The low falling board handed Rounds the win eliminating Kane out in 9th place winning $13,745.

Shortly after Joe Mandia was eliminated in 8th place when first loosing a big pot and the majority of his chips to Justin Pechie.  Then on the very next hand Mandia threw in the rest of his chips pre Flop with pocket Sixes.  This was called by William Jensen with :ah :kd and the Flop came down :8d :qc :10d The Turn was no help to either player with the :9h coming down but the River killed off Mandia giving Jensen a broad way straight coming down with the :js

Robert Pacleb on the short stack made a good go of it doubling up against William Jensen Flopping a pair of King’s and holding on to take the pot.  On the very next hand this came to an end when his :ad :kh was beaten by Hal Havisch with :kd :qc Hal hit a King and Queen on the flop for two pairs and Pacleb never recovered going out in 7th place winning $25,771.

Hal Havlisch became the third player in a row to double up and then be eliminated on the very next hand.  He was beaten by Michael Graffeo who hit trip Tens on the Turn leaving Hal drawing dead on the River, Hal won $34,365 for his 6th place finish.

The players around the table joked about the double up curse as Tommy Rounds first doubled against  Michael Graffeo and then was eliminated into 5th place by Saif Ahmad.  Rounds raised pre Flop holding :ac :kd and Ahmad called with :jc :10h The Flop came down :2d :qs :jh to which Rounds moved All In and was instantly called by Ahmad.  Ahmad’s Jack was good enough to take the pot with the final two cards coming down :qh :4s leaving Rounds to head for the rail in 5th place winning $43,811.

Justin Pechie was short stacked at this point but picked up pocket Kings and made a small bet pre Flop and William Jensen called.  The Flop came down :7s :8c :9c and again Pechie made a small raise which was followed by an All In move from Jensen to which Pechie called.  Pechie was behind when Jensen flipped over the nuts :jc :10d leaving Pechie needing a miracle to survive.  This never came with the :as and :10c coming down on the Turn and River knocking Pechie out in 4th place winning $59,274.

William Jensen and Saif Ahmad’s aggressive play started to tell on Michael Graffeo’s chip stack as it was gradually eaten away leaving him needing to make a stand sooner or later.  This moment came when he raised pre Flop with :ac :10d and was called by Jensen with :kd :4c The Flop gave Jensen the lead pairing his four and with the final board showing :5h :2c :4h :7s :6d came Graffeo’s elimination out in 3rd place taking home $88,481.

Down to heads up and William Jensen held a slender lead over Ahmad with 1 million in chips to $875,000.  This didn’t stop Ahmad taking down the first three pots before winning the event getting a lucky break, hitting a broad way straight on the last two cards when Jensen had flopped two pairs Kings and Jacks.  Saif Ahmad won $217,329 taking his Limit Hold’em Championship WSOP bracelet.
