The 44th event at the World series of Poker 2007  was a $2,000 buy-in Omaha Hi-low event.  534 players started out with the prize pool just falling short of 1 million dollars.  The winner was set to receive $240,057 and the rest of the prize pool was shared between the top 54 finishers.

The final table was a quiet affair with most spectators watching the final stages of the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E event running alongside.  The final table line up was as follows.

Final Table Chip Rankings:

  • 1st Marcel Lurske $427,000
  • 2nd Ming Lee $373,000
  • 3rd Frankie O’Dell $318,000
  • 4th Martin Corpuz Jr $292,000
  • 5th Jess Robinson $255,000
  • 6th Thang Luu $238,000
  • 7th Marvin Ryan $104,000
  • 8th Mitch Maples $70,000
  • 9th Stuart Paterson $58,000

Mitch Maples was the first player to go when he Flopped a set of Jacks and was up against Thang Luu on a straight draw going down to the final two cards.  The straight came for Luu on the River and Maples left the tournament in 9th collecting $14,578.

Stuart Paterson on the short stack was next to go, he raised pre Flop with :ac :ah :6c :8c and was called by Marcel Luske with :6d :7c :10d :kd The Flop came down :jh :8s :2c to which Luske bet putting Paterson All In and he called.  The :qc on the Turn strengthened Patterson’s position giving him a flush draw but the :ad on the River gave Luske the broad way straight to take the pot.

Ming lee was beaten in a huge four way pot shortly after going out in 7th place winning $27,699.  Martin Corpuz won the low pot with 7-6 low and Marvin Ryan won the high hand with a Nine high straight.  Marcel Luske the other player involved, mucked his hand and Lee headed for the rail.

Jess Robinson’s exit came when he threw his short stack of $65,000 into the middle with :as :2d :4s :qc and was called by Martin Corpuz with :ad :5d :9h :kc Corpuz hit trip Fives on the River to take the pot after Robinson was ahead with a pair of Queens after the Turn.

Play slowed down considerably and we had to wait a while before we witnessed the next elimination from the event.  This came when Marvin Ryan moved All In for his last $60,000 and was called by three other players Luske, O’Dell and Corpuz.  The board :kh :ks :2d :7s :jh was checked down all the cards, amazingly the pot was split between Corpuz and O’Dell only having two pairs Kings and Sevens and no low hand possible.

We were down to heads up in no time at all when first of all Marcel Luske was eliminated by Thang Luu.  Luu hit a higher two pair than Luske taking the pot with Luske not qualifying with any low hand.  It was Martin Corpuz’s turn to go out when he was beaten by O’Dell, hitting a Queen high straight on the River with Corpuz having a set of Queens.

Heads up was a foregone conclusion as Luu only had $60,000 in chips after being crippled by O’Dell on the hand before Corpuz’s elimination.  On the first hand Luu was All In with :4s :5c :10d :js and O’Dell called with :2h :3d :9c :qd The board came down :qc :9s :6d :jh :ad giving O’Dell the pot with two pairs Queens and Nines and the event win.
