The fifth event of The World Series of Poker 2007  was played over three days, starting on June 3rd.  327 players entered the $2,500 buy in event, playing Omaha / Seven Card Stud Hi-Low.  The total generated prize pool reached $725,100, paying up to 32nd place.

There were many well known faces seen across the card room at the start of play with the likes of Daniel Negreanu, 10 times bracelet winners Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan, Greg Raymer, Phil Ivey and Chris “Jesus” Ferguson.

After the first days play Tom Schneider was leading the field in the chip rankings on $54,500 in chips.  The most notable player doing well was Mike Matusow in 4th on $39,000.  Phil Ivey, Johnny Chan and Daniel Negreanu didn’t make it past the first day.

The second days play would narrow the field to six players for the final table to be played on the final day.  When we reached this point Tom Schneider was still in the lead on $526,000 followed by Annie Duke and Chris “Jesus” Ferguson on just over $200,000.  Joseph Bolnick was on the short stack with 125,000.

Final Table Chip Standings:

  • 1st Tom Schneider $526,000
  • 2nd Annie Duke $239,000
  • 3rd Chris “Jesus” Ferguson $208,000
  • 4th Chris Bell $200,000
  • 5th David Benyamie $ 170,000
  • 6th Ed Tonnellier $88,000

David Benyamine was the first player to be eliminated.  Pushing All In on the short stack he ran into Tom Schneider with a set of Aces and took home $29,708 in 6th place.  After this the next half dozen hands saw each player taking down the blinds and 11 pots were chopped.

Chris Bell met his end going out next in 5th place winning $39,109.  Going all in with only four big blinds left in his chip stack we was up against Chris Ferguson and Tom Schneider.  Bell hit two pair but this didn’t hold up with Ferguson taking the low hand and Schneider winning the high hand.

The leader board at this point has Tom Schneider still with a huge lead holding over 1 million in chips, Annie Duke was second on $305,000, Ed Tonnellier was on $185,000 and Chris Ferguson was on the short stack with $90,000.

Just after the break Schneider again eliminated the short stack holder who this time happened to be Chris Ferguson.  This strengthened Schneider’s position further and he was looking good to take the win with three players remaining.

Annie Duke was the next player to go out in 3rd place winning $75,210.  On the previous two hands she lost a lot of chips making lay downs on two awful 4th streets on both hands. Then she ran into Ed Tonnellier holding A-A-2-3 and was knocked out of the tournament

Down to heads up and Ed Tonnellier had caught Tom Schneider up only being on $300,000 less chips.  But as throughout this tournament Schneider dominated play and eventually ground out this victory.  An excellent performance from Schneider leading the event from start to finish.  He collects $214,347 for first place and the World Series of Poker 2007 gold bracelet.

WSOP 2007 Event 5 Final standings:

  • 1st Tom Schneider $214,347
  • 2nd Ed Tonnellier $118,456
  • 3rd Annie duke $75,210
  • 4th Chris Ferguson $50,391
  • 5th Chris Bell $39,109
  • 6th David Benyamine $29,708
