The three day World Championship Limit Hold’em event started on 10th June at the World Series of Poker 2007, the 18th event of the series.  The $5,000 buy in tournament attracted 257 players creating a total prize pool of $1,207,900.  The top 27 finishers cashed in with 1st place set to take $333,379.

There was a star studded line up in attendance with the likes of J.C.Tran, Barry Greenstein, Mimi Tran, Daniel Negreanu and Doyle Brunson all staring out.

It took quite a while to reach the end of day two being Limit Hold’em.  ESPN was filming a commercial in the final table area on the third day of this event forcing this final table to be played out in the main room, with the watching spectators situated right around the table making this quite an unusual stage for a final table to be played out.

Final Table Chip Standings:

  • 1st William Thorsson $585,000
  • 2nd Ray Dehkharghani $471,000
  • 3rd Geoff Sanford $333,000
  • 4th Tom Koral $325,000
  • 5th Thor Hansen $282,000
  • 6th Don Todd $207,000
  • 7th David Gee $162,000
  • 8th Saro Getzoyan $109,000
  • 9th Gabriel Nassif $97,000

On the very first hand on this final table, Gabriel Nassif decided to make an immediate stand to try and make an early double up.  Nassif was All In after the Flop came down :10h :kc :2h holding :kh :9h top pair and a possible flush.  He found himself behind in the hand against Geoff Sanford with :ad :ks Nassif needed a nine or a heart on the last two cards to survive.  Neither card came on either the Turn with it showing a :5s and the River bettered Sanfords hand coming down with an :ac eliminating Nassif in 9th place winning $21,742.

Not long afterwards we lost two players in the space of three hands, Geoff Sanford eliminated his second opponent in a row hitting a set of three’s on the Flop forcing Don Todd All In holding :ah :kh Todd hit an Ace on the River but this was no help to him not improving his hand enough to over take Sanford, going out in 8th winning $30,198.

Two hand later it was Ray Dehkharghani’s turn to head for the rail, beaten by William Thorsson.  Ray was eventually All In after the Flop :jd :3s :5d and found his :kc :9d dominated by Thorsson with :kd :qc Only the nine on the last two cards would save Ray’s bacon, but it never came giving Thorsson the pot eliminating Ray in 7th place.

Tom Koral was next to go after David Gee hit a straight on the turn, with the board showing :10s :2h :8s :9d with Koral only holding pocket sevens, Koral was drwaing dead on the River spelling the end of his tournament going out in 6th place winning $54,356.

David Gee holding pocket Kings ran into Saro Getzoyan with pocket Aces.  The Aces held up giving Getzoyan the biggest pot of the night crippling Gee down to his last few chips.  Gee immediately pushed All In with his short stack the very next hand with :ks :7s His bad luck continued as he was called by Thor Hansen holding pocket Tens.  Gee was eliminated from the tournament after only hitting a pair of Sevens on the board, not enough to beat Hansen’s Tens going out in 5th place taking home $68,850.

Thor Hansen was unlucky to go out next, first loosing most of his chips to Geoff Sanford doubling him up, and then the very next hand got caught by Saro Gatzoyan hitting trip Sevens on the Turn when only having ace high.

At this point Saro Getzoyan was leading the chip rankings on 1.2 million in chips with both Thorsson and Sanford not too far behind on around the $650,000 mark.

Getzoyan didn’t make too many moves from this point onwards leaving Thorsson and Sanford to battle it out to make it to the heads up showdown.  Sanford won this battle first taking a huge pot hitting trip fours after the Turn with Thorsson holding pocket sixes.  The very next hand Thorsson found himself All In with :8d :5d against Sanford with :as :8c Neither player hit the board eliminating Thorsson in 3rd place wining $136,493.

Getzoyan dominated heads up play grinding Sanford down, eventually winning the tournament forcing Sanford All In when having top pair after the Flop.  The Turn left Sanford drawing dead giving Getzoyan trips and it was all over.  Getzoyan winning $333,379 for 1st place and taking home his first WSOP bracelet.
