453 players started out the 26th Event at the World Series of Poker 2008 which was the $1,500 Razz tournament. The total prize pool generated rose to $679,500 with the first placed prize set at $157,619. A few notable players starting out in this field included Barry Greenstein, Doyle Brunson, Chris “jesus” Ferguson and last years winner Katja Thater.

Razz is a game where seven cards are dealt and the lowest 5 cards make up your hand. So the nuts is the wheel (A-2-3-4-5) and so on. Straights, flushes and pair’s have no bearing on the out come of the hands.

The first days play saw Barry Greenstein end the day in the chip lead with just 104 players remaining. The notable players not to make the second days play included John Juanda, Doyle Brunson, Men Nguyen, Phil Ivey and Katja Thater.

The bubble burst half way through the second day with the last 48 players making the money. Chris Viox had a good second day, taking the chip lead into the final table with $359,500. Barry Greenstein was solid throughout and was in second place on $243,000. Mike Wattell was on the short stack with $74,000 but had three players just ahead of him on just over $100,000.

Final Table Chip Rankings

  • 1st Chris Viox $359,500
  • 2nd Barry Greenstein $243,000
  • 3rd Brandon Leeds $206,500
  • 4th Joseph Michael $155,000
  • 5th Archie Karas $113,000
  • 6th Mark Tenner $108,500
  • 7th Chris Klondike $105,000
  • 8th Mike Wattel $74,000

Both the short stacked players left the tournament early on with Mike Wattell being the first. Wattel moved all his chips in pre flop and was called by Barry Greenstein and Chris Viox. Viox made the nuts A-2-3-4-5 winning the pot sending Wattell out in 8th place. Archie “the greek” Karas was next to go shortly after. Karas made Eight low by the seventh street but was beaten by Brandon Leeds who had made Six low.

Play slowed down for a while before the next elimination came about, but then all of a sudden three was gone within a couple of orbit’s round the table. Joseph Michael started us off moving all his chips in with (6-4) 7 against Viox with (A-5) 7. Viox ran out the winner completing 8 low to Michael’s 9 low, Joseph Michael collected $25,661 in 6th place.

Chris Viox picked up his third knockout as he eliminated Brandon Leeds into 5th place. Voix ended up with 6 low which easily beat Leeds with 8 low. Just a few hands later it was mark Tenner’s turn to head for the rail. Tenner was leading on the 5th street all the way down the cards against Chris Klodnicki, this was until Chris made Seven low on the last card when Tenner could only manage a Jack low.

Three handed play took over four hours of play, to reach the heads up showdown. Barry Greenstein took control of the table during this time taking the chip lead. The end came when Klodnicki made a wheel (A-2-3-4-5) on the seventh street, with all the chips going in on the 5th street, his opponent Viox was eliminated with seven low.

Heads up play between Klodnicki and Greenstein was a slow drawn out affair taking over two hours to complete. Greenstein took a 2-1 advantage in the chip rankings into heads up and didn’t look like loosing this at any point. Greenstein finished off Klodnicki when he hit a Jack low, and beat Klodnicki’s King low who was on a draw. Barry Greenstein picked up the $157,619 first place prize and his third WSOP career bracelet.
