The most prestigious event in poker being the World Series of Poker $50,000 H.O.R.S.E event, took place as the 45th event at this year’s WSOP. The 145 players starting out created a prize pool of $7,104,000 which paid down to 16th place. The winner was set to receive $1,989,120 as well as the Chip Reese memorial trophy and the WSOP bracelet.

The field was certainly what you would call a star studded line up with all the best poker players around including some of the best online players. The event was scheduled to be played over five days with the eight seater final table to be played out on the last day. The eliminations was not as frequent as usual being a limit event.

Once we reached the end of the third day there were just 24 players remaining the field included the likes of Scotty Nguyen, Barry Greenstein, Huck Seed, Erick Lindgren, Phil Ivey, Doyle Brunson and Daniel Negreanu. The final 24 players fighting to get on the final table took around ten hours to loose just sixteen players. Play loosened up after Mike Wattel burst the bubble going out in 15th place.

The day finally ended with Erick Lindgren and Scotty Nguyen the two players at the top of the player of the year leader board, were sat in the top spots both on over $3 million in chips. Followed by Barry Greenstein, Patrick Bueno brought up the rear on the short stack with $695,000.

Bueno started off with A-K-4 to Lindgren’s 8-7-2. Lindgren ended up with 8 low and Bueno’s hand fell apart pairing a Four with the rest coming out all high.

The limit format and huge chip stacks ensured the eliminations were quite spread out so it took a while for the next one to come about. This came when Huck Seed got the last of his chips in playing Stud Hi-Low against DeMichele. Seed bet out all the way down the cards with a pair of Nines on show and was All In by the seventh street. DeMichele had made a flush which easily beat Seed’s hand knocking him out in 7th winning $284,160. Barry Greenstein followed Seed to the rail next as he was eliminated by Scotty Nguyen playing the same game. Nguyen had rolled up Sevens for trips beating Greenstein’s two pair Aces and Fours.

After another long wait DeMichele picked up a huge pot involving Lyle Berman and Scotty Nguyen playing Razz. Each player bet out all the way down the cards and Berman was All In by the seventh street. DeMichele won the hand tabling 8-7-5-4-3 with both his opponents mucking there hands. Berman won $444,000 finishing in 5th place. Fourth place was decided when Matt Glantz got involved in a big pot against Nguyen playing Omaha Hi-Low. Nguyen completed a club flush and Seven low on the River with Glantz just making two pair.

Three handed play lasted for over six hours to get through which saw Nguyen take control of the table. Erick Lindgren went the opposite direction and was eventually All In against Nguyen playing stud. Lindgren’s pair of Eights was just beaten by a pair of Nines and he collected $781,440 in prize money finishing third.

Nguyen had amassed over $12 million in chips to Demoiselle’s $2.6 million and put this event to bed in quick time.
