The 1,251 survivors of day 1a and day 1b returned to battle it in the World Series of Poker 2008 main event, all looking to reach the third day which is when the bubble is expected to burst. The action started at a super fast pace as the short stacks got busy early on which led to a large number of early exits.

William Exelby was one of the first players out as his pocket Kings was cracked by :as :kh when his opponent flopped an Ace. Thomas Swensen went in exactly the same way with pocket Kings loosing to the big slick. Jens Voertmann winner of the $3,000 H.O.R.S.E event found his :as :js no good against pocket Queens and Anna Wroblewski was out when she ran into pocket Aces with :ac :kh

The eliminations continued to flow at a rate of about 100 players per hour as the tournament progressed. Philip Hilm went out in a three way pot with pocket Fives and his opponents had pocket Kings and Aces. The Aces held up to eliminate two players at once. As we approached the first break we lost the Ladies WSOP champion Svetlana Gromenkova, Jimmy Fricke, Scotty Nguyen, Paul Wasicka and Robert Varkonyi.

After the dinner break there was only half the field left with 665 players remaining. Brian Schaedich was leading in the chip rankings by a mile as he had amassed a $500,000 chip stack. Erick Lindgren’s tournament came to an end at this point as he lost most of his chips when his pocket Jacks was bettered by pocket Kings. Just a few hands later the same player knocked him out of the event as Lindgren didn’t improve with :as :js against pocket Sevens.

The last couple of sessions of the day saw the fall of Barry Greenstein, Nick Shuleman, Martin Klaser, Billy Baxter and Billy “the croc” Argyros. The chip leader Brian Schaedich looked to be unbeatable as he hit every hand and ended up with just over $800,000, over double of what his nearest rival had. Just 466 players survived the action today. Tomorrow would see the return of the survivors of day 1c and 1d. The top 10 chip rankings at the end of Day 2a looked like this.
